Samuel David was born on August 8th, 1850.  Samuel David's father was Samuel B Marshall and his mother was Mary Wingfield.  His paternal grandparents were John Marshall and Leah Ann Davis; his maternal grandparents were James Owen Wingfield and Sarah Whiteside. He had five brothers and a sister, named John L, Owen W, Caleb Wallace, Joseph Taylor, Hugh Lewis and Emily.  He was the sixth oldest of the seven children.
