Robert was born about 1572 in Somerset, England.  Robert's father was Robert alias William of Ilminster Marshall and his mother was Joan Joanne Owsley Owseley.  His paternal grandparents were William Marshall and Mary Barnes (poss); his maternal grandparents were <Unknown> and <Unknown>. He had seven brothers and a sister, named Edward, Nicholas, John the younger   became Mayor of Exeter, Roger, Thomas, Willam, John the Elder of Chillington and Anne.
