John Thomas was born in 1765 in Charlotte County, Virginia.  John Thomas' father was Joseph Marshall and his mother was Judith.  His paternal grandparents were John Wilkins Marshall Sr and Hannah Baldwin. He had two brothers and a sister, named Joseph, Thomas Baldwin and Ann.  He was the oldest of the four children.
