George Armstrong's father was Samuel Marshall and his mother was Jane McCord Russell.  His paternal grandparents were Samuel Marshall and Margaret Mary Cracroft; his maternal grandparents were Alexander Russell and Mary Anderson. He had seven brothers and three sisters, named John Reynolds, unk, Samuel Alexander, James Gamble, William Russell, Armstrong Logan, George Alexander, Margaret Jane, Mary Ann and Elizabeth Rankin.
