Frederick was born about 1859 in Bolton, Lancashire, England.  Frederick's father was William Marshall and his mother was Charlotte Abrams.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Marshall and Sarah. He had a brother and three sisters, named William Henry, Sarah L, Charlotte and Emmeline.  He was the youngest of the five children.
