William was born in 1820 in Linton, Skipton, Yorkshire, England.  William's father was Thomas Marshall and his mother was Sarah. He had three sisters named Ann, Sarah and Jane.  He was the second oldest of the four children.  He died at the age of 52 in 1872 in Bolton, Lancashire, England.
