Charlotte was born in 1854 in Bolton, Lancashire, England.  Charlotte's father was William Marshall and her mother was Charlotte Abrams.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Marshall and Sarah. She had two brothers and two sisters, named William Henry, Frederick, Sarah L and Emmeline.  She was the third oldest of the five children.
