David was born in 1798 in Mecklenburg Co, VA.  David's father was Capt Francis Marshall Jr and his mother was Phebe Hatcher.  His paternal grandparents are Francis Marshall and Mary Thompson. He had three sisters named Nancy, Jane Branch and Eliza.  He is the second oldest of the four children.
