May Bell's father was Robert Howard Love and her mother was Phoebe Hinman Waterman.  Her paternal grandparents were Thomas Love (Chickasaw) and Ho-Ma-Ho-Ta "Mahota" Emahota Incunnomar (half white). She had three half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Albert, Thomas Benjamin, Joe N, Maude Winter and Eugenia.
