Joe N's father was Robert Howard Love and his mother was Sally. His paternal grandparents were Thomas Love (Chickasaw) and Ho-Ma-Ho-Ta "Mahota" Emahota Incunnomar (half white). He had two brothers and two sisters, named Albert, Thomas Benjamin, Maude Winter and Eugenia. He had a half-sister named May Bell.
