Thomas was born in 1718 in Ireland.  Thomas' father was John pioneer Lewis and his mother was Margaret Lynn.  His paternal grandparents were Andrew Lewis and Mary Calhoun; his maternal grandparents were William Lynn and Margaret Patton. He had five brothers and two sisters, named Samuel, Andrew, William, Anne, Charles, Margaret Lynn and Alice.  He was the second oldest of the eight children.
