Thomas was born on October 17th, 1870.  Thomas' father was David Frost Castleman and his mother was Elizabeth Beard.  His paternal grandparents were Thomas Castleman and Hannah Bushrod Frost. He had two brothers and four sisters, named William Henry, George Herbert, Fannie, Carrie, Annie Newman and Janie.  He was the fifth oldest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and three half-sisters, named Charlie T, Louisa Frances, Margaret J and Hannah.
