Bynum was born in 1787.  Bynum's father was Isham Alford and his mother was Anne Ferrell.  His paternal grandparents were Lodwick Alford and Rebecca Jackson Rebecker Ferrell; his maternal grandparents were John Bone Bowen Ferrell and Ann Fish. He had two brothers and a sister, named Brittain Washington, Archebald and Ann.  He was the third oldest of the four children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Elizabeth and Jesse.  He died at the age of 64 in 1851.
