Ralph was born in 1356 in , Kilkenny, , Ireland. Ralph's father was James 2nd Earl Ormond Butler and his mother was LADY ELIZABETH Baroness of Hertforth Darcy. His maternal grandparents were SIR JOHN LeNeveu of Knatyth DeDarcy and JOAN DeBurgh. He had two brothers and four sisters, named Thomas, James 3rd Earl Ormond, Felice, Eleanor, Joan and Catherine.
