James was born on July 10th, 1451 in Stirling, Stirlingshire, Scotland.1  James' father was King of Scotland James (Twin) Stewart II and his mother was Princess Maria of Guelders.  His paternal grandparents were King of Scotland James Stewart I and Joan Beaufort; his maternal grandparents were Duke Arnold of Guelders and Princess Katharina of Kleve. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Alexander, David, John, Mary and Margaret.  He was the oldest of the six children.  He died as a war casualty, Battle of Sauchieburn, Stirling, at the age of 36 on June 11th, 1488 in Saucheiburn, Stirling, Scotland.  He was buried in Cambuskenneth Abbey.2 3
