Was 102 years at time of death Funeral Register/Certificate of Death indicates she was a housekeeper. possibly owned her home (not clear). Funeral cost $252.00 by Jennings and Ayers Funeral Home. According to Jessie Murphy, Sallie was in the family home on the Nashville Highway (later the Old Nashville Highway) adjacent to the Stones River Battlefield at the time of the Battle. The home was used as a hospital, but it is unclear which army utilized the home. The house burned down some time in the early 80's. Her nickname was "Miss Puss" because she always had a sour puss.

The 1850 Census shows Louisa Murphy 49 living with an M.B. Jordan (31) and his wife Sarah (20), presumably Lousia's daughter from previous marriage, and son Edward (1). In the house is a Mary Jones (16) presumably Louisa's daughter from previous marriage, Harrison Murphy (13), Louisa V. (11), Samual. (10) and Ezekiel (7). There are several Jordan farms nearby the Murphy land in the 1878 maps, but anything we could draw from that would be purely speculation. It is a little clumsey to be comparing an 1878 map to an 1850 census. I guess it is better to wait for a census closer to the time. In 1878 There is a H Murphy living in Dist 12 near what we believe would be the Ezekiel Murphy Farm.

Originally had him listed as born in 1837. In 1889, the Texas Confederate Home for Men was established where the present day University Housing is located on West Sixth Street. After the Civil War, the Union Soldiers were provided pensions and care, but the Confederate Soldiers were left to fend for themselves. Through a large community effort, the John B. Hood Camp of Veterans, in conjunction with the Albert Sidney Johnston Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy, raised funds that enabled them to build several brick cottages for Confederate soldiers. Capt. Ben McCullough was superintendent of the home around 1912 and lived there with his wife, who was the widow of R.C. Barton. Mrs. McCullough’s granddaughter remembers visiting the home and being fascinated by the wires that existed between the dining room and the cabins. These wires allowed the blind veterans to hook their walking canes on them and safely navigate around the grounds. In 1920, Hobby Memorial Hospital was completed and with dwindling numbers of veterans in residence, the 48th Legislature decided that it was appropriate to transfer mental patients to the Confederate Home. The Home was demolished in 1970, but residents of the Clarksville area still remember the home. Taken From - http://www.main.org/owana/history/
