His paternal grandparents were Count Enguerrand of Ponthieu II and Adeliza of Normandy; his maternal grandparents were Steward of Normandy Hubert de Ries and Albreda de Preaux. He had two brothers and a sister, named Piers, Roger and Muriel.-
