James McDonald was born on December 10th, 1869 in , Hamilton County, Tennessee, USA.1 James McDonald's father was Glassgow Varnell and his mother was Elizabeth Hughes. His maternal grandparents were William Brownlow Hughes and Delight Lassister. He had four brothers and four sisters, named William W., Glasco, Samuel Nelson, Houston William, Adelaide, Margaret L., Mary Ellen and Detta. He was the fourth youngest of the nine children. He died at the age of 76 on May 26th, 1946 in Knoxville, , Tennessee, USA. He was buried in Highland Memorial Cemetery,.-
