John Hughes (son of Francis (G4) Hughes and Rebecca Allen?) was born 1779, and died March 15, 1871 in ,Hamilton, Tennessee. He married Jane Skiles, daughter of William Skiles.
Includes Notes for John Hughes:
John Wilson, a genealogical writer for the Chattanooga News Free Press wrote in an article on April 2, 1995:
A Hamilton County lawsuit in 1880 tells of the objections that Francis Hughes had to his son's relations with Jane Skiles. They had two sons, Hezekiah and Francis (Frank), and were still unmarried. John Hughes left Greene County to head west, but he halted and wrote a letter to Jane Skiles, saying that despite his father's objections he would marry her if she would come to him. She did so and they were married on the Middle Cumberland at the home of a man named Hoover. They returned to Greene County, then pushed on to Hamilton County.
From a letter sent to Margie Shields by David Gray:
"Old John Hughes and wife Elizabeth Skiles were married about 1800 at the Ford or Fork of Cumberland River at home of an Esq Whover (perhaps Hoover?). This is from depositions taken after death of John Hughes in about 1876 in attempts to settle his estate. He died intestate. One deposition said that 2 children (Hezakiah and Francis) were born to Jane Skiles before her marriage to John, but that he was the father of both and that old Francis objected to his marriage as he was only 19. Now further the depositions said that after birth of 2nd child he sent back to Greeneville for her and she joined him at Ford or Fork of Cumberland where they were married by Esq Whover (it is always spelled so). So this probably places Francis Hughes and Margaret, too, in KY for many years - but Francis Hughes you will recall was in Burke Co. NC in 1776 and then on Watauga about 1780 - then in 1832 or thereabouts he was in Greene Co. where he filed for a pension. If all this is correct then he left Shenandoah and was in Burke Co. by 1776"
Note that John was about 15 years old when his father bought 252 acres of land from Martin Click (1794 - Greene Co. minutes). John's son,
Hezakiah, later marries Elizabeth Click, daughter of Martin Click.
In Deed Book 9, page 452, Francis Hughes (et al) sells to John Hughes (his son) and James Allen (John's son-in-law) 178 acres of land on the South Side of Nolichucky River.
John Hughes, Sr. spent his last days with his daughter, Nancy Hughes Hixson. He had earlier transferred to Nancy the girl slave Dol. John Hughes, Sr. was 90 when he died in 1871. His wife, Jane, had died many years earlier.
Tuesday, 28 July, 1812 Bill of Sale from Francis Hughes to John Hughes, dated 3 June 1812 for a negro woman named Aggy and 4 small children.
From "Passports of Southeastern Pioneers, 1770-1823" Cherokee Indian Agency Passports:
"John Hughs has permission to descend the Tennessee River with a Keelbottomed Boat laden with whiskey, Brandy & Cider Royal on his
passage to Pancore on the West side of the Mississippi" I have no idea whether or not this applies to this John Hughs.
