Mary (or Sarah) Jane was born on May 18th, 1860 in Terry, Orange, Texas. Mary (or Sarah) Jane's father was Daniel Henry Simmons and her mother was Susanah Jemima Harris. Her maternal grandparents were Victor Nely Harris and Nancy Ann Netterville. She had four brothers and eight sisters, named William Nely, Thomas Henry, Charles Netterville, Daniel Ethen, Ann Sarah, Susannah Jemima (or Martha Rebecca), Martha Rebecca, Rachel Elizabeth, Amanda Jane, Susanah Samantha, Henrieta Virginia and Victoria Aurelia. She was the sixth youngest of the thirteen children.
