Raymond was born about 1906 in , , Oklahoma, USA.1 Raymond's father was William Parks Shipley and his mother was Belle Purdion. His paternal grandparents were Elijah Shipley and Angeline Boyd. He had three brothers and two sisters, named Rand, Everett, Earl Preach, Martle and Wanda. He was the oldest of the six children.
