John S. was born in 1822. John S.'s father was John Dabney BROWNING Jr. and his mother was Mary Routt DULANEY. His paternal grandparents were Lieutenant John BROWNING Sr. and Betty (Betty). He had two brothers and four sisters, named William Woodford, Mark A. H., Ann Margaret, Mary Eleanor, Lucy Elizabeth and Sarah E. N.. He was the third youngest of the seven children. He had a half-brother and four half-sisters, named Gustavus Judson, Henrietta C., Fanny Lavinia, Emily Sophronia and Tabitha.-
