Gilbert was born on October 18th, 1276 in Wyke, Cornwall, England. Gilbert's father was Richard Talbot and his mother was Sarah De Beauchamp. His paternal grandfather was Gilbert Talbot and his paternal grandmother is Gwenthlian verch Rhys Mechyll; his maternal grandparents were William III De Beauchamp and Isabel De Mauduit. He had two brothers and three sisters, named Richard, Thomas, Kathrine, Joan and Gwenllian. He was the oldest of the six children.
