His paternal grandparents were Gruffydd ap Cynan and Angharad verch Owain; his maternal grandfather was Llywarch ap Trahaiarn and his maternal grandmother is Dyddgu verch Iorweth. He had eight brothers and a sister, named Dafydd ap, Maelgwn ap, Iorwerth ap Owain, Rhirid ap, Cynan ap, Madog ap, Cadell ap, Cynwrig ap and Gwenllian verch.
