Cadell ap was born about 1143. Cadell ap's father was Owain ap Gruffyd and his mother is Gwladys verch Llywarch. His paternal grandparents were Gruffydd ap Cynan and Angharad verch Owain; his maternal grandfather was Llywarch ap Trahaiarn and his maternal grandmother is Dyddgu verch Iorweth. He had eight brothers and a sister, named Dafydd ap, Maelgwn ap, Iorwerth ap Owain, Rhirid ap, Cynan ap, Madog ap, Einion ap, Cynwrig ap and Gwenllian verch.
