Margaret was born about 1560 in Ferniehirst Castle, Scotland. Margaret's father was Thomas Carr and her mother was Janet Kirkcaldy. Her paternal grandfather was John Kerr and her paternal grandmother is Katherine Ker; her maternal grandfather was William Kirkcaldy. She had four brothers and two sisters, named William, ?, Andrew, ?, Mary and Julian. She was the second oldest of the seven children. She had a half-brother named Robert.
