Alan was born about 1126 in Paisley Abbey, Renfrewshire, Scotland. Alan's father was Walter FitzAlan and his mother is Eschyna De Molle. His paternal grandparents were Alan FitzFlaad and Avelina De Hesding; his maternal grandparents are Thomas De Londonius and ? De Molle. He had a brother and a sister, named Simon and Marjory.
