Catherine was born in 1320 in Roet, Hainault, Flanders. Catherine's father was Willem III De Avesnes and her mother was Jeanne De Valois. Her paternal grandparents were Jean II De Avesnes and Philippine De Luxembourg; her maternal grandparents were Charles I Capet De Valois and Marguerite De Naples. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Jan, Willem IV, Louis, Sibylla, Margaretha, Phillipa, Johanna, Agnaes and Elisabeth. She was the third youngest of the ten children.
