Jean was born about 1225 in Acre, Palestine.  Jean's father was Jean De Brienne and his mother was Berengaria of Castile and Leon.  His paternal grandfather was Erard De Brienne and his paternal grandmother is Agnes De Montbelliar; his maternal grandparents were Alfonso IX of Castile and Leon and Berengaria Alfonsez Sanchez of Castile. He had two brothers and two sisters, named Alphonse, Louis, Marie and Margaret.  He was the second oldest of the five children. He had a half-sister named Isabel II.  He died in 1296.  He was buried in Abby of Maubussion, France.

‌Jean and Jeanne were married in a religious ceremony in 1244.  They had a daughter named Blanche.
