Nicholas was born in 1529 in Birchanger (Near Bishop's Stortford), Essex, England. Nicholas' father was William Thorowgood and his mother was Joanne UNKNOWN. His paternal grandfather was Geoffrey Thorowgood. He had four brothers named Geoffrey, John Of Birchanger, Thomas and Robert. He was the second youngest of the five children.
