Susan was born in 1217 in Kilkenny, Kildare, Ireland. Susan's father was Gilbert De Clare and her mother was Isabel Mareschal. Her paternal grandparents were Richard De Clare and Amice Fitzrobert; her maternal grandmother is UNKNOWN UNKNOWN. She had three brothers and six sisters, named Richard, William, Gilbert, Joan, Maud, Amica, Isabel, Adeliza and Agnes. She is the third oldest of the ten children.
