Joan was born in 1520 in Down Ampney, Gloucestershire, England.1 Joan's father was Anthony Hungerford and her mother was Jane Darell. Her paternal grandparents were John Hungerford and Margaret Blount; her maternal grandfather was Edward Darell and her maternal grandmother is Jane Crofts. She had three brothers and four sisters, named John, Edward, Edmund, Mary, Susan, Elizabeth and Jane. She is the fourth youngest of the eight children.-
