Thomas was born about 1790 in Randolph County, North Carolina. Thomas' father was Jeremiah York and his mother was Sarah Allred. His paternal grandparents were Semore York and Sylvania L Aldredge; his maternal grandparents were John Allred and Margaret Cheney. He had seven brothers and seven sisters, named Seymour (Semore), John Crabtree, Jabez, Darius, Jeremiah Jr., Barnabus, William, Sarah, Ann, Aquilla, Hulda, Dorcas, Jane and Catherine. He had two half-brothers and a half-sister, named Andrew J., Alford D. and Tamer.-
