Riley was born about 1805 in Granger, TN. Riley's father was Semore York and his mother was Ann Elizabeth Wood. His paternal grandparents were Semore York and Sylvania L Aldredge. He had a brother and two sisters, named Harrison, Sarah and Elizabeth. He was the second youngest of the four children. He had three half-brothers and four half-sisters, named Uriah, William Enoch Erick, John Nelson, Rachel, Sylvana, Mary (Polly) and Martha.-
