His paternal grandparents were Seymour (Semore) York and Meriam Beck; his maternal grandparents were William Donaldson and Unknown. He had five brothers and three sisters, named Reverend, Joseph Bowens, Elisha Newton, Martin Van Buren, Cicero C., Adeline, Mary Margaret and Caroline. He was the second oldest of the nine children. He had a half-brother and a half-sister, named John L. and Margaret.-
