Carolus Magnus 
Carolus was born in Ingolheim. Carolus' father was Pepin III " le Bref" and his mother was Bertrada or Berthe II of Laon. His paternal grandparents were Karl Martel and Chrotrude or Rotrude of Allemania; his maternal grandparents were Flora of Hungary and Bertrada de Laon. He had a brother and four sisters, named Carloman, Rothaide, Adelaide, Gertrude and Bertha. He died in Aachen, North Rhine-Westphalia, Preussen. He was buried in Cathedral at Aachen.General Notes
Charlemagne, the greatest figure of the Middle ages and his younger brother, Carloman, succeeded to equal portions of one of the most powerful of European kingdoms, bounded by the Pyrenees, the Alps, the Mediterranean and the Ocean. Carloman, the younger brother died soon after the death of their father, Pepin The Short, and with the consent of the great nobles, Charlemagne became King. Desiderius, The King of Lombardy, had made large encroachments upon the states of the Roman Pontiff, whose cause was taken up by Charlemagne. This led to feuds, which Bertha, his mother, endeavored to appease by arranging a marriage between her son and the daughter of the Lombard. But Charlemagne soon took a disgust to the wife thus imposed upon him, and repudiated her, that he might marry Hildegarde, the daughter of a noble family in Swabia (Suabin).
Charlemagne's empire included modern-day France, Switzerland, Austria, Belgium, The Netherlands, much of Germany, some of Spain and part of Italy.
A biography written by Einhard, a friend of Charlemagne's son Louis the Pious describes Charlemagne as more than 2 metres tall, with piercing eyes, fair hair, a thick neck, and a potbelly. He was strong, fond of exercise, and had an alert mind and a forceful personality. Charlemagne could read and speak Latin, but never learned to write it.
