As they did little but eat and drink and enjoy themselves, they went by the name of the sluggard kings, all power being in the hands of the Mayors of the Palace. Among these Mayors, Pepin of Heristal made himself conspicuos. His home was near Spa in the woodland country around Liege. He made the office hereditary in his family.
