Lothar I of was born in Altdorf, Bavaria. Lothar I of's father was Ludovico Pio and his mother was Ermengarde de Hesbaye. His paternal grandparents were Carolus Magnus and Hildegarde of Savoy; his maternal grandparents were Ingram and Hedwig De Bavaria. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Gerard, Arnulf, Pepin, Louis the, Ludwig II, Aupais of, Hildegarde, Dhouda, Rotrude, Adelaide and Beatrice.
