Gerberge was born about 0925 in Lorraine.  Gerberge's father was Duke Gilbert of Lorraine and her mother was Princess Gerberge Auceps von Sachsen of the Germans.  Her paternal grandfather was Count Regnier ("Longhals") de Lorraine I of Hainault and her paternal grandmother is Princess Hersent of France; her maternal grandparents were Emperor Henry ("the Fowler") I and Saint Matilda of Ringelheim. She had three sisters named Alberada, Alberade and Gerberge.  She is the oldest of the four children. She had a half-brother and a half-sister, named Charles and Mathilde.


Gerberge's family with Count Adalbert ("the Pious") of Vermandois

‌Gerberge and "the Pious" were married in a religious ceremony before 0954 in France.  They had a son and a daughter, named Herbert and Gisela.
