George (2), born 1686, married Deborah Crandall in 1710, was an ab
le physician and a large land-owner. He was an earnest Christian, a Sevent
h-day Baptist, the first of his name holding that day. He had six children

Dr. George Stillman was born in EN in 1679. He was educated and appre
nticed to the trade of a tailor, but not liking it, he studied medicine, a
nd became known as Doctor Stillman. He probably joined his father at Hadl
ey MA about 1700 and with the family moved to Wethersfield CT. We short
ly after find him at Westerly, RI where he was made a freeman. Prof. Thom
as B. Stillman relates that "George Jr. on a journey from Wethersfie
ld to Boston, passed through the town of Westerly, RI, the seat of a Socie
ty of Sabbatarians, who observed the seventh day of the week as the Sabbat
h, and he was much suprised to see the people busy at their work on Sund
ay and throught they must be a very duluded set. Upon his return from Bost
on, he throught he would stop at Westerly and enquire into the matter. Acc
ordingly, he had an interview with their pastor, Elder Thomas Hiscox, b
ut instead of convincing them of error, he became himself convinced and to
ok up his abode with them."
He married in Westerly in 1706 Deborah Crandall. He purchased a lar
ge tract of land in Westerly, situated in a bend of the Pawcatuck River, w
here he settled after his marriage and practiced madicine. He was a memb
er of the Westerly Baptist Church and he was Clerk of the church for ov
er 30 years. He seems to have kept up his acquaintance with Wethersfie
ld as he traded several times with that community. There are several recor
ds of visits interchanged between the Stillman "cuzins" of Westerly and We
thersfield. Dr. George died in 1760.
