Chief Justice of the Common Pleas, 6 Nov. 1546, and was of the privy counc
il,
and in such favour with King Henry VIII., that he was appointed by that mo
narch
one of the executors of his will.  He purchased the estate of Boughton, in
Northamptonshire, which at an earlier period had been possessed by his fam
ily
through the marriage with the heiress of that name.

1  NOTE Edmund was King of England for only a few months. After thedea
th of his  father, Æthelred II, in April 1016, Edmund led thedefense of t
he city of  London against the invading KnutSveinsson (Canute), and was pr
oclaimed  king by the Londoners.Meanwhile, the Witan (Council), meeti
ng at  Southampton, choseCanute as King. After a series of inconclusive  m
ilitaryengagements, in which Edmund performed brilliantly and earnedthe ni
ckname "Ironside", he defeated the Danish forces atOxford, Kent,  but w
as routed by Canute's forces at Ashingdon,Essex. A subsequent peace  agree
ment was made, with Edmundcontrolling Wessex and Canute controlling  Merc
ia andNorthumbria. It was also agreed that whoever survived the  otherwou
ld take control of the whole realm. Unfortunately for Edmund,he  died in N
ovember, 1016, transferring the Kingship of AllEngland  completely to Canu
te.
