His paternal grandparents were William Thomas and Gwladus Verch Dafydd; his maternal grandfather was Walter Devereaux and his maternal grandmother is Elizabeth Merbury. He had five brothers and six sisters, named Walter, Philip, John, Thomas, William, Margaret, Maud, Cecilie, Isabel, Anne and Catherine. He is the second oldest of the twelve children.-
