John was born in 1836 in Green Co.,Kentucky. John's father was Thomas E. Underwood and his mother was Elizabeth Ann Druin. His paternal grandparents were Hiram Underwood and Celia Buley. He had six brothers and seven sisters, named William Thomas , Rev., Andrew Jackson, Samuel Druin, George Durrett, James D., Benjamin Owens, Frances, Ellen, Catherine Ann, Clarissa, Jane, Mary E. and Sarah M.. He is the fourth oldest of the fourteen children.-
