General Notes

Robert McNutt was a Major in Sam Houston's army.  He commanded the Texas Forces at the Harrisburg camp during the Battle of San Jacinto.  He was also a soldier in the War of 1812. These words are inscribed on his tombstone. The tombstone was erected by the state of Texas in 1963. Major Robert McNutt's name is also listed on a name plate which is in the north wing of the San Jacinto Monument.  Major Robert McNutt is in the McNutt -Allen Cemetery. the location is on Hy 79 , six miles east of Round Rock ,Texas.  The land is part of the McNutt  land grant.  Turn to the right off the highway, cross the Missouri-Pacific Railroad tracks and enter gate to the pasture. the cemetery is located about 100 feet south of the gate and fence, beneath Live Oak trees. Some of the other members of the McNutt and Allen buried there are :  His wife Mary. His grandson William Barret Travis Allen.  WBT Allen wife Mary Elizabeth.  WBT Allen son Travis Bud, his daughter Ida, . Rachel Allen one of WBT Allen had a son also named Travis Bud who like her brother died as an infant of one year. Benjamin P. Allens had a daughter who died at birth , she was given the name of Viola.  Also a brother of WBT Allen , Joseph Warren Allen. Other children buried there are Lola Kate McNutt , Edna McNutt, William Brice Allen. The sister of WBT Travis ,Louise.  WBT Allen was the son of James Bud and Nancy McNutt Allen.  Also in the cemetery is the Harris Family . The Harris family formerly owned the land which was part of the original McNutt Grant.  This information was gathered by Dorothy McNutt, Bob Allen Reed, Doris (Allen) Underwood, and passed on to Lillie (Underwood) Franke.  Personal note by Lillie:  My mother and father first took me to this cemetery in the Spring.  The pasture was a blanket of Blue Bonnets my  favorite flower.  It was very moving to me to see this old forgotten cemetery.  and it was at this time I decided to pass on to my children and their children the stories of their family history and the struggle these men and women put forth to come to Texas.

In September 1813 at the age of 18 he enlisted as a private to fight in the War of 1812.  By Oct 1814 he was a Lieutenant in the Twenty-seventh Regular Tennessee Militia, and by 1826 he was a first major in the Second Regiment of Maury County, Tn.  While in Tennessee \he engaged in land speculation and operated an inn.  Thgis source has him marring on Feb. 26 1818.  He had four sons and six daughters.  the youngest son and daughter were born in Texas.  The family moved to Texas in 1834.  He was 39.  he reced two head rights in Williamson and Austin Counties and settled near Bellville, Austin Co.  On March 1 1836 Mcnutt assumed the rank of captain and Joined  lieutenants Gibson Kuykendall and John Burleson in forming a company of Austin County volunteers to relieve the Alamo.  After the fall of the Alamo, McNutt and his company, under the command of Gen Sam Houston, joined in the retreat from Gonzales.  During the battle of San Jacinto, McNutt , who had recently been promoted to major, was placed in command of the baggage guard and ammunition.  He was also responsible for the wounded and sick, many of whom were suffering from measles.  He was relieved from further military duties in 1836 and for his service received two grants totaling 960 acres in Bastrop and Lee counties.  He later served as tax assessor and collector for Austin County until ill health forced him to resign.  In 1851 he settled near Georgetown, where he lived until his death.  IN 1963 a historical marker was erected an McNUTT grave site in Williamson County honoring his military service at the battle
