James D. was born in 1838 in Dale Co.,Alabama.  James D.'s father is William Keahey and his mother is Mary McInnis.  His paternal grandfather was George Keahey and his paternal grandmother is Sarah McFarland. He had four brothers and four sisters, named George W., John Samuel, Miles, William Greene, Margaret, Nancy Emaline, Martha and Sarah.  He is the fourth youngest of the nine children.
