Lettie May was born on April 20th, 1896 in Texas. Lettie May's father was William Henry Avitts and her mother was Ann Margaret Keahey. Her maternal grandparents were Archibald Smith Keahey and Martha Elizabeth Robertson. She had five brothers and a sister, named Luther Anderson, Elzie Smith, Robert Milton, Charles Lester, William Henry ,Jr. and Agnes Annie. She is the oldest of the seven children.-
