His paternal grandparents were Reginald de Grey and Alianor le Strange; his maternal grandfather was William de Astley and his maternal grandmother is Joan de Willoughby. He had a brother and a sister, named Edward and Elizabeth. He had two half-brothers and two half-sisters, named Henry, John, Isabella and Margaret Merriet.
