Eliza J. was born in May 1899 in Kanawha County, West Virginia. Eliza J.'s father was Abraham P. Shaffer and her mother was Olive Adkinson. Her paternal grandparents were Paul Shaver and Susan Todd. She had a brother and three sisters, named Seigel, Dollie M., G. and Lucy. She is the youngest of the five children.-
