Matthew was born on December 6th, 1796 in Virginia. Matthew's father was James Dyer and his mother is Jane Ralston. His paternal grandparents were Roger Sr. Dyer and Hannah Smith. He had a brother and two sisters, named Reuben, Hester and Hannah. He had eleven half-brothers and six half-sisters, named Benjamin, Reuben, William B., John D., James Jr., Zebulon, Roger, Peachy, Infant Son, Son, Parkham, Hannah, Hester, Elizabeth, Phoebe, Elizabeth and Jane.
