Frederick I was born in 1122 in Waiblingen, Germany.  Frederick I's father was Frederick II Hohenstaufen of Swabia and his mother was Judith of Bavaria.  His paternal grandparents were Frederick I von Hohenstaufen of Swabia and Sophia (Agnes) of Franconia Germany; his maternal grandparents were Henry III the Black of Bavaria and Wulfida of Saxony. He had two sisters named Adrienne Hohenstaufen of and Bertha Hohenstaufen of.  He was the second oldest of the three children.  He died at the age of 68 on June 10th, 1190 in River Calycandus, Cilicia.
